Three Things Every Business Owner Should Consider When Hiring Commercial Restoration Contractors

11/18/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: When water damage strikes a business, getting things up and running again is the top priority. But which restoration company is right for the job? By doing a little research and asking a few key questions, it’s easy to select the perfect company.

3 Important Tips When Choosing a Commercial Damage Restoration Contractor

When disaster strikes a business in the form of water damage, repairing the issues and getting the business back up and running quickly is crucial. Calling in experts who handle the project professionally and in a timely manner is imperative in this process.

Choosing the right commercial damage restoration company for the job is easy when you know what to look for and what to ask. SERVPRO, a leader in the North Dallas area providing services including commercial cleaning, emergency mold, water, and fire restoration services, offers these three tips when choosing a commercial damage restoration contractor.

1. Check the Company’s Online Reputation

Selecting a business with a good reputation increases the chance for repairs to be completed quickly and correctly. A reputable company has a good online presence with positive reviews, good referrals, few complaints, and testimonials from past satisfied clients.

Checking a company’s reputation online is easy. Go to Google and enter the company’s name. Almost everything about the company will show up in the search results.

Other online sources to check are Yelp (and other review sites) and the Better Business Bureau. Finally, checking the company’s social media channels will reveal how the company represents itself and interacts with its client base. An example is SERVPRO’s Twitter account.

2. Make Sure the Company Is Certified

Many companies advertise themselves as professionals but lack industry certifications. While these companies may provide good work, they may not be the best choice. Selecting a company that holds industry certifications ensures they have the most up-to-date training and knowledge available to handle your project.

3. Ask Questions

Making sure you have the right restoration company for the specific repair is important. Asking questions helps you gain knowledge regarding the specific experience and qualifications of the potential company.

Some important questions to ask include:

  •     What does the repair process consist of?
  •     How will it affect business working hours?
  •     How soon can the project be started?
  •     What is the projected timeline of the job?
  •     Does the work come with a warranty?
  •     Will the business need to close or can it remain open during the repair?
  •     Will there be a cost estimate before work begins?
  •     Does the company specialize in water damage restoration?

Don’t be shy when it comes to asking questions. Reputable restoration companies like SERVPRO have no problem answering questions and making sure potential customers feel confident and comfortable with the process.

When Disaster Strikes, Strike Back

Water damage is not something business owners should take on themselves. Leaving it to the experts ensures that the business is repaired safely, professionally, efficiently and future concerns (like the potential growth of mold) are taken care of.

SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison specializes in water damage restoration as well as commercial cleanup and storm damage restoration. With experience and certifications backing up their work, calling them day or night is the first step when water damage strikes.

Fire Safety Tips to Keep Your Commercial Property Safe

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison provides information on how simple fire safety tips can reduce the risk of fires in commercial properties.

SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison, TX, is a fire restoration company that also provides water damage restoration and commercial cleaning services for residential and commercial properties. The company assists commercial property owners after emergencies and understands how devastating these incidents can be to a business. While SERVPRO provides excellent commercial damage restoration services, prevention will always be the better option. The best place to start with fire prevention is with OHSA guidelines and by following several commercial fire safety tips for business properties.

Five Tips to Reduce Fire Risks in Commercial Buildings

#1 Maintain Fire Safety Equipment

Fire equipment like fire alarms, extinguishers, and sprinklers need regular maintenance and replacement. Extinguishers have an expiration date, and battery-powered fire alarms need regular replacing as well.

It’s best to have a dedicated maintenance schedule that includes formal inspections and smaller independent evaluations throughout the year. Assigning one or two days of the year to fire equipment maintenance ensures that in the event of a fire, the relevant equipment performs as expected.

#2 Conduct Regular Employee Training

Some workplaces contain hazards that can contribute to the formation of fires. Labs may work with flammable chemicals, while kitchens are notorious for regular outbreaks. Employee training can reduce the incidence of fires as employees learn the importance of following safety procedures and understand workplace safety guidelines.

#3 Develop an Evacuation Strategy

An evacuation strategy is an essential part of any commercial building’s overall safety strategy. It ensures that everyone can exit the building safely in the event of a fire or other emergency.

The emergency plan should include clearly marked exits and escape routes. It’s also a good idea to put evacuation maps in high-traffic areas, stairwells, and the main walkways in the building.

#4 Keep a Clean Space

Untidy workspaces are a massive safety hazard. Not only are employees more likely to trip and fall in cluttered workplaces, but they will also struggle to exit during a fire. Fire extinguishers may be difficult to reach, and sprinklers may struggle to penetrate through the clutter to the fire itself.

Clutter can also contribute to the spread of a fire, which is why it’s vital to work with commercial cleaning services and practice good housekeeping at all times. If a business works with hazardous materials, these should also be stored and disposed of according to OHSA guidelines.

#5 Avoid Electrical Hazards

Electrical fires are a common cause of commercial property fires. Defective wiring and overloaded circuits are vulnerable to shorts, which will result in sparks and eventually lead to full-blown electrical fires.

In terms of firefighting, electrical fires are some of the most difficult to put out. Many of the worst fire restoration jobs SERVPRO technicians face are due to electrical fires. Older buildings, in particular, often have poor wiring and overloaded outlets, which may need replacing by a qualified electrician.

Commercial Water Damage Prevention

10/10/2021 (Permalink)

As the owner of a commercial property in Dallas and the surrounding areas, you are likely responsible for maintaining the building's pipework, including repairs if things go wrong. Most office buildings and businesses remain unoccupied at night and on weekends. As such, this creates the potential for extensive water damage to occur.

Prevent Water Damage by Detecting and Repairing Water Leaks

Leaks may be caused suddenly as in the case of bursting pipes, which can be detected instantly, or gradually due to a hose or pipe leaking slowly over a period of time. Underground leaks are another common problem. To find out if your business has a water leak look and listen for the following signs.

  • Do you hear the sound of running water?
  • Are any wet areas or running water visible?
  • Can you detect an unusual drop in water pressure?

If you answered in the affirmative to any of these questions, there is a good chance an undetected water leak is present at your business. SERVPRO of Coppell and west Addison can come to your place of business and check for moisture in your walls, floors, and ceiling. If you do have a water leak, we will be able to successfully help with the structural drying of your business.

Four Tips for Using Commercial Damage Restoration Services To Get Back to Business As Usual After A Fire or Flood

9/27/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: The professionals at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison recommend these four tips to help businesses deal with a disaster through commercial damage restoration services.

SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison is a residential and commercial damage restoration company that’s part of a notable multinational chain of more than 1,700 locally-owned and operated franchises. The restoration specialists at SERVPRO provide 24-hour emergency response services, and their training can handle whatever Texas can throw at them.

Four Business Recovery Tips For Affordable Commercial Damage Restoration

When it comes to disaster remediation, SERVPRO’s residential and commercial damage restoration teams are ready to respond and assess property damage. They offer reliable results to help a business move forward after a fire, flood, or storm.

Here are four tips from their experts for how to respond after a disaster:

#1 Call the Insurance Company Right Away for Storm, Fire, or Water Damage Restoration

Residential and commercial restoration services are essential for recovery after fire, flood, and storm damages, whether in a private or industrial setting. The idea that business owners should wait to contact their insurance provider if they don’t see much damage is a myth. It is best to notify the insurance provider immediately, even if the damage does not seem serious at first glance.

Failing to contact the insurance company quickly might even result in missed coverage windows and other inconvenient misunderstandings. A discerning eye, careful documentation, and a prompt claim with the help of SERVPRO mean that any business can be on the road to recovery extremely quickly.

#2 Prepare for the Fire Restoration or Commercial Cleaning Experts

Business owners can do several tasks to prepare for the commercial cleaning experts, including turning off any utilities and removing easily accessible furniture or valuables if it is safe to do so. Salvageable items are tempting for looters and may get in the way as fire restoration specialists do their jobs. Similarly, turning off utilities eliminates a step for the experts and means less chance of additional property damage or danger from water, electricity, and gas issues.

#3 Document the Storm Damage Restoration Process

Careful documentation during the fire or storm damage restoration process is essential to an easy claim and any legal proceeding that may arise. It may be too dangerous to enter a commercial building after a fire or storm, but a business owner should make every other effort to document the lost or damaged items. Otherwise, they risk exclusion from the claims process or lost coverage.

Business owners should also keep careful logs of who they call, which services they pay for, and anything else that might be relevant to the restoration process. Regardless of the scope of repairs, documenting the entire process ensures that business owners do not forget something or confuse the order of events along the way.

#4 Contact The Local Commercial Damage Restoration Experts

Before scheduling any damage remediation services, business owners should take the time to choose a trustworthy and reliable expert in their area like SERVPRO. They are faster and more competent to address any size disaster, whether that’s fire, water, and storm damage, mold remediation, and other commercial services.

Contact SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison at (972) 233-8400 for all commercial damage restoration and cleaning jobs in the area, or visit them at 1707 E. Belt Line Rd Suite 103-4 Coppell, TX 75019.

Guide to Insurance Claims and Water Damage Restoration in Farmers Branch, TX

8/12/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: The experts at SERVPRO offer a step-by-step guide to help business owners in Farmers Branch, TX, navigate the commercial water damage restoration insurance claim process successfully.

Water damage can be catastrophic for any business. Getting started with the water damage restoration process as soon as possible is vital to minimize downtime and revenue loss. The experts at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison, a leading water damage restoration company, advise business owners to approach the insurance claims process with a step-by-step approach to speed things along.

How to Complete the Commercial Water Damage Process

#1 File an Insurance Claim and Call a Commercial Water Damage Restoration Company

The first step is to start the insurance claims process to get the ball rolling. Doing so can help guide the rest of the restoration process as some providers have policyholders follow specific steps. Call number two should be to a commercial water damage restoration company

Delaying the water removal process beyond 24 to 48 hours can lead to secondary damage, such as mold, and may even lead to a full or partial claim denial if the insurance company determines some of the damage was due to lack of action.

#2 Document the Damages

After stopping the flow of water (if possible) and calling a commercial water damage restoration company, the next step is to document the damage thoroughly. Take photos and videos. This process might also include counting losses in inventory and collecting related receipts for damaged items.

The goal is to provide an accurate picture of the water damage for insurance purposes before beginning any repairs. A reputable water damage restoration company can also assist with this process by taking additional photos during the restoration process and providing professional statements and cost estimates.

#3 Meet With the Insurance Adjuster

An insurance claims adjuster is responsible for confirming and gathering additional evidence of the damage and restoration process. They also determine whether the damage is covered, and if so, the cost to repair the damage. While there's no set time for an insurance adjuster to arrive, typically, it's within two weeks of the incident.

#4 Settle or Negotiate With the Insurance Company

Once the insurance adjuster completes their investigation, they will submit a recommendation for a settlement amount. You can accept this offer, attempt to negotiate or hire a lawyer to do so for you. Generally, payment is issued within 30 days of the initial insurance claim. However, disputes over the degree of water damage or restoration costs can prolong the process.

Working with an experienced commercial restoration company can be invaluable in this respect, as they will have the know-how to submit a successful damage claim and provide the right evidence to challenge a low settlement offer.

What Causes Commercial Water Damage?

9/9/2019 (Permalink)

If your business or commercial building has a water damage, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.

Most commercial property owners in Addison, Tx assume their property can only suffer significant water damage during torrential downpours and rare flooding from rainstorms. While this can be true, weather like this is few and far between in the Dallas area.

The most common commercial water damage disasters happen from the following:

1.) Sprinkler systems

Some office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work with fire protection systems. While these sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they need replacement.

2.) Appliances and Equipment

We see this most often in restaurants and catering halls, as well as businesses that have appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance falls and sends water across your building, especially on a Friday afternoon when no one is in until Monday morning, you may come in to face a water emergency! Unfortunately, that happens A LOT!!

3.) Broken pipes and plumbing

Just like in residential properties, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could happen!

If your business or commercial property is suffering from commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Metrocrest is here to get you back up and running. Call us at (972) 233-8400 and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

Do You Have a Plan in Place to Protect Your Business?

5/16/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 https://www.SERVPROmetrocrest.com/

Many business owners are caught off guard when disaster strikes. Thinking that it would never happen to them or never even considering the possibility of a disaster, they fail to have a plan in place for their business. Unfortunately, many times, once disaster strikes, it’s too late. Many businesses are forced to close permanently after disaster because they were not prepared.

According to foxbusiness.com, there are 7 steps you can take if you are a small business owner to help protect your business from disaster.

  • Risk Assessment: Determine what types of emergencies are most likely to affect your company and then evaluate your level of preparedness. Check in with your insurance company, make sure employees are trained for emergencies, have data backed up and stored at a safe location.
  • Review Your Insurance Coverage: Talk with your insurance agent to make sure your business is covered if hit by disaster. After determining what types of emergencies your business is most prone to, make sure your policy covers those types of situations. Ask about business interruption insurance which helps business owners continue to pay on-going bills while operations are shut down during disaster recovery.
  • Create a Contingency Plan: Review your business operations and determine which are most important for the survival of your business. Form a process to manage these functions in the event of a disaster. Determine an alternate business location where business operations can continue during the recovery process.
  • Create a Communications Plan: Disasters create chaos and having a communications plan in place in advance will help minimize panic.
  • Back Up Your Data: Making sure all your data is backed up and stored in a safe place is critical. Cloud-based data solutions are best as they stay safe during disasters and can be accessed from any location.
  • Build an Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit available on site including items like water, flashlights, fire extinguishers, etc.
  • Review and Rehearse You Plan: Once your plan is in place, make sure your employees know the plan and have practiced implementing it.

While disasters can be devastating to a business, preparation can help in the recovery process. By acting before disaster strikes and getting a plan in place, business owners can help protect their business in times of emergencies.

Understanding the Type of Water Damage You Are Dealing in Your Business

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

Whether your business needs a water pipe repair or has an issue with the sump pump, dealing with water damage in your business can be time-consuming and expensive. Often, it can be helpful to understand what type of water damage has occurred.

1. The Source of the Water

One of the primary ways water damage is classified has to do with the source of the water. If water comes from an appliance and is clean, it is classified as category 1 damage. However, water that comes from a broken pipe and has contaminants is considered to be gray water, or category 2 water damage. Water that contains sewage and significant biohazards is labeled as category 3 water damage, known as black water.

2. The Amount of Time the Water Sits

Water that was a category 1 originally can turn into category 2 damage if the water is not quickly removed. If the cause of the flooding is not remedied quickly, and you, for example, put off a water pipe repair, it becomes increasingly likely that mold and bacteria will grow near or in the standing water. Generally, the sooner water is removed, the less likely major damage will occur.

3. Cleanliness of the Water

The cleanliness of the water is another major factor that determines the category of water damage. Category 2 water damage is water that is contaminated with some amount of hazardous material. If a major flood occurs, it’s often possible for there to be different categories of water damage in one building. Even if water was originally clean, water that has flooded one floor and has seeped through to another floor could become contaminated.

With knowledge of how category 2 water damage is identified, you can look out for potential causes of this type of water damage and you can implement solutions, such as a water pipe repair, to keep your business safe and dry. If your business has already sustained water damage, it could be useful to work with water damage restoration experts like SERVPRO of Metrocrest.

Steps to take after a commercial water loss

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400

Hopefully your business will never experience a commercial water damage. However, in case your business does, it is important to know how to handle the situation before it happens, so you are prepared if and when it does.

Flood damage can cause structural concerns and several other issues, so there are steps to take immediately afterward so you can protect your business and employees.

Turn Off Potential Hazards

If it is safe to do so, you will want to make sure that you turn off any electricity to the affected areas. Mixing electricity and water is extremely dangerous.

SERVPRO of Metrocrest will have the necessary tools such as a digital moisture meter to find any signs of hidden moisture behind walls to make sure that they can completely dry out your business properly and avoid any mold from growing.

Make Sure to Protect Yourself

If you must walk in any flood waters, wear sturdy shoes/boots which will protect your feet from hidden debris in the water which could trip or cut you. Flood waters can be contaminated, even to the naked eye so wearing proper shoes/books are a must. Look out for snakes or other critters which have been displaced by the flood, and do not ever put your hands anywhere you cannot see.

SERVPRO of Metrocrest is aware of all the procedures and steps to take to keep themselves and others safe, plus will have all the protective gear to wear as they are checking everything out for you.

Document and Take Pictures

Make sure and document as much of the damage to your commercial property as thoroughly as you can. This will help you out when you are filing your claim with your insurance company for the water damage created by the flood. When you do re-enter your business, get photographic evidence of the damage that was left behind by the water, plus any water that is still there. Document all that you can and then speak with your insurance company in a prompt manner.

Salvage What you Can

Flooring will always need to be tossed out if they are damaged by flood waters, as well as insulation and or drywall.

Mold damage is very common after your business has experienced commercial water damage. Mold only needs about twenty-four to forty-eight hours to start growing. SERVPRO of Metrocrest can assist you in not only your commercial water mitigation but also your mold remediation needs.

SERVPRO of Metrocrest will quickly respond to your commercial flood damage needs and we will make it “Like it never even happened.” Contact us at (972) 233-8400.

Protect Your Commercial Buildings from Water Damage Due to Plumbing Leaks

12/29/2017 (Permalink)

Plumbing leaks in properties with multiple stories, such as office buildings and hotels in the North Dallas area, can be more destructive if someone does not turn off the water supply immediately once the leak is found. The property damage that results can end up in business interruption loss, as well as potential liability claims by tenants, guests, and other property owners.

If the leak takes place within normal business hours and there is a maintenance staff present, they will typically shut off the water supply. However, if it happens after hours, and there is no maintenance stuff, the employees who are currently there may not know what they should do.

To minimize losses, it helps to know emergency water damage guidelines. The following steps can be taken to examine property and set procedures.

Examine your property
Begin by inspecting the following areas of the building at least once every month to look for dampness:
    •    Water distribution systems, particularly galvanized and steel plumbing. Make a note of the condition and age of these systems.
    •    Underground parking, and other areas that cannot drain. These places may need portable or fixed pumps for emergency purposes.
    •    Fountains, pools, and other special water features.

Come up with emergency guidelines
Create a loss mitigation plan to which employees need to adhere when they detect a leak. It should be comprised of written guidelines that cover the following:
    •    A procedure for going through initial and annual training on the procedures with tenants and employees, so they know what to do in case of a water leak.
    •    The locations of water shut-off valves and directions on closing them. Add a floor plan or diagram if it is possible.
    •    Assigned procedures for shutting off sprinkler systems, including employees who can access the riser rooms.
    •    An emergency contact list with contact information for plumbers, maintenance staff, tenants, electricians, and water mitigation service vendors.
    •    Emergency contact information for the local water utility company
    •    Emergency contact information for your broker or agent
    •    Any other parties who could possibly be involved
    •    Locations of any key operating systems, as well as essential records and services
    •    Offsite storage of any essential documentation
    •    Procedures for relocation and movement of items, if applicable.
    •    Written procedures to be followed in the event of closing of the facility, shutdown of equipment, and evacuation.
    •    Procedures to take care of any issues developed in the process of building assessment.

Get in touch with your insurance agent:
    •    Arrange a preloss consultation with agent on mitigation of water. If necessary, this could be a joint meeting that includes a water mitigation vendor as well.
    •    Put in an automatic leak detection system, which will detect leaks and then shut off the water supply. Policyholders may get discounts from preferred vendors.
    •    Get in touch with your agent to see if it is possible to schedule infrared thermal imaging for your property. This technology is non-invasive and we'll be able to sense minuscule leaks from the roof and inside the walls of the building.
    •    Having a plan in place can minimize water damage Houston to the building and items within. This can help prevent a business interruption loss as well. If you would like to know more, call your insurance agent.

SERVPRO of Metrocrest was called out to an emergency water damage at a high rise building in North Dallas on 8/16/2017 by the building's Chief Engineer.  An ERP (Emergency Response Plan) had been created by SERVPRO of Metrocrest for the building about 6 months prior to the water damage.  SERVPRO of Metrocrest arrived on site within 30 minutes of receiving the initial call for emergency water damage service.

Commercial Water Damage - What To Do When It Happens

7/14/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Disasters DO Happen - SERVPRO® of Metrocrest is READY (972) 233-8400!

As the owner of a commercial property in Dallas and the surrounding areas, you will likely be responsible for maintaining its pipework including repairs if things go wrong. Since most office buildings and businesses remain unoccupied at night and on weekends, the potential for water damage can be very high on these premises.

Detecting Water Damage

Leaks can be caused either suddenly as in the case of bursting pipes, which can be detected instantly, or gradually by a hose or pipe leaking slowly over a period of time. Underground leaks are another common problem. To find out if your business has a water leak look for the following signs.

  • Do you hear the sound of running water?
  • Are any wet areas or running water visible?
  • Can you detect an unusual drop in water pressure?

If you find yourself answering in the affirmative to any of these questions in Dallas and the surrounding areas, there is a good chance of an undetected water leak present at your business. SERVPRO® of Metrocrest can come to your place of business and check for moisture in your walls, floors, and ceiling. If you do in fact have a water leak, we will be able to successfully help with the structural drying of your business.
