The top 4 causes of water damage in homes

??Water damage can be a costly, time-consuming problem for homeowners. From flooding to plumbing issues, water damage can quickly spiral into an expensive and dangerous situation. Knowing the most common sources of water damage in homes is key to preventing it from happening in the first place. Let’s break those down now.

Plumbing Leaks

One of the most common causes of water damage is plumbing leaks. These leaks can range from minor drips to major bursts that require immediate attention. It’s important to check all your plumbing fixtures regularly and fix any leaks you find as soon as possible. Failing to do so could result in significant amounts of water leaking into your walls and floors, causing both structural damage and mold growth.

Roof Leaks

Another common source of home water damage is roof leaks. Even a small leak can cause considerable amounts of damage if left unchecked for too long, as the leaked water will slowly seep into your walls and ceilings, eventually leading to mold growth and/or dry rot. Make sure you inspect your roof regularly for signs of wear and tear, such as missing or damaged shingles, cracked flashing, or other signs that could lead to a leaky roof.

Appliance Malfunctions

Appliances like refrigerators and washing machines are another common source of water damage in homes. Appliance malfunctions can range from potential flooding caused by a leaking fridge or dishwasher to mold growth caused by excessive dampness in your laundry room due to a malfunctioning washing machine or dryer vent. Make sure you inspect all your appliances regularly to ensure they are functioning properly and aren’t at risk for causing any type of water-related disaster!

Weather Conditions

Weather conditions like heavy rain, hail, snowfall, hurricanes, and floods all have the potential to cause water damage if they are severe enough or occur frequently enough. You should inspect your roof regularly for any signs of wear or weakness that could make it more susceptible to weather-related damage. Additionally, make sure all windows and doors are closed securely when storms hit so as not to create an entryway for excess moisture into your home.

Water damage is one of the most destructive forces that can affect your home, especially if not addressed quickly. But thankfully, there are many things you can do to help prevent it from happening in the first place. Taking proactive steps (like regularly checking pipes and hoses for leaks or cracks, inspecting roofs prior to storm season, and ensuring appliances are maintained properly) can help you avoid water damage and the costly repairs that come with it.

Three Main Types of Winter Hazards and How to Address Them

12/28/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Coppell and West Addison goes over three common winter hazards and how restoration services can help take care of water damage.

Winter is a great time to enjoy the cold weather and holiday festivities, but homeowners should be aware of several hazards during winter. SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison shares the three main types of winter threats and how seasonal hazards and restoration services go hand in hand.

1. Slips and falls

Being active in the winter is just as important as being active any other time of year, but it's imperative to be as careful as possible. Remember to wear a helmet and protective gear when skiing and snowboarding, and shoes with proper traction while running.

Even exiting a vehicle on an icy driveway can lead to an unfortunate slip-and-fall accident, so always be aware of the surrounding area at all times. If homeowners notice ice freezing over on a walkway, find the source of the water and shut it off to prevent hazards.

2. Spike in sickness

The winter months can cause a spike in the flu and other illnesses. Many people don't think about this winter seasonal hazard, but when people are inside more, germs can spread quickly. Plus, cold and dry air can weaken immune resistance. If an illness is a concern, go the preventative route by getting a flu shot and keeping hands clean and physical contact to a minimum to reduce the chances of catching a winter cold or flu.

A knowledgeable water damage restoration company can quickly take care of water damage from a burst pipe, but a winter cold can be more challenging.

3. Water damage

Water damage can sneak up on a home or business during the winter months due to cold weather conditions such as:

  • Burst pipes: When pipes freeze, they can burst, causing slow leaks that spread water and mold damage throughout a home.
  • Blizzards: A blizzard is blowing or falling snow with winds of at least 35 mph. This dangerous type of storm reduces visibility and can lead to water damage once the snow melts.
  • Sleet: Sleet is rain or melting snow that freezes before it hits the ground. Even though it's softer than hail, it can still make roads slippery and damage a home or business, requiring storm damage restoration.
  • Freezing rain: If it starts to rain in freezing temperatures, the water can freeze once it makes contact with the ground. Once the ice melts, that water can seep into a home's foundation and cause structural damage.

Unfortunately, the weather can be unpredictable—especially during the winter. That's why it's essential to work with a certified water damage restoration company like SERVPRO that understands seasonal hazards and restoration.

SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison has water damage under control

6 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Water Damage Restoration Company

12/7/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Coppell and West Addison, an expert in water damage restoration services, details six questions homeowners should ask before hiring a company.

Following a severe rain or winter storm, an overflowing toilet, or flooding from a burst pipe, you may need water damage restoration services. However, spending hours Googling the right company can be highly stressful.

This guide will explore six questions homeowners in Las Colinas, TX, should ask before hiring a water damage restoration company to make the vetting process easier.

1. How much experience does the company have?

Restoring a home or business following significant water damage can be tricky. The process involves cleaning up water, mold remediation, and restoring walls, furniture, floors, and more.

The right water restoration company will have plenty of experience handling specific types of water damage or flood damage homeowners are dealing with.

2. Do technicians have the right qualifications?

Any water damage restoration technician should have the right qualifications, training, licenses, and insurance to perform their job. These qualifications mean they're up to date with the latest industry practices.

3. Does the company use the latest equipment and industry standards?

The restoration industry frequently improves to incorporate new equipment, technology, and industry standards. The latest equipment ensures faster completion and more efficient solutions.

For mold remediation, ensure that a company uses hospital-approved cleaning solutions and tough solvents to eliminate mold, viruses, and bacteria.

4. Does the company offer 24/7 emergency services?

Water damage or mold growth is never convenient. However, they're incredibly inconvenient when they happen overnight. Disasters can strike anytime, and some situations call for immediate action outside the usual business hours.

The right company will offer 24/7 emergency services. This service means homeowners don't have to wait until morning or the next day to deal with a flooded basement.

5. Is the company truly local?

When searching for a local water damage restoration company, most people expect the search results to be local. Unfortunately, these results are sometimes misleading.

Some businesses only have a few locations but say they'll travel far to offer their services. A company traveling far to provide services can present three problems:

  • Emergencies: Some issues don't require immediate attention, and homeowners can wait an hour or more. However, emergency flooding requires immediate help, and a company far away won't get there in time.
  • A lack of local knowledge: Knowledge of a specific area can significantly improve service. A local restoration company may know specific sewage lines that cause homeowners issues.
  • Extra fees: While many reputable companies or contractors won't charge travel fees, some might. Usually, companies are upfront about these fees, but they can still take homeowners by surprise.

6. Does the team cooperate with insurance companies?

Many homeowners cannot pay for water damage restoration out of pocket. Insurance companies will cover water damage restoration services depending on the homeowner's insurance policy. Choose a restoration company that works with insurance companies and can help document the damage and file a claim.

Let SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison assist today!

Dealing with water damage of any kind or size can present many problems. Instead of searching for a water damage restoration company, homeowners can put their trust in SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison.

How to Repair Water Damage on Wood Furniture: A Concise Guide

10/20/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Coppell and West Addison explains how water can damage wooden furniture and provides expert guidance for repairing wooden furniture after water damage occurs.

Water seeps deep into porous wooden furniture, softening the wood and spurring mold and mildew growth. Visible water damage indicators include water stains, white spots, and other discoloration.

White spots indicate that the water hasn’t penetrated the wood’s surface, while dark marks indicate significant damage that has penetrated the seal. Depending on the severity of the water-damaged wooden furniture, it may be wise to obtain water damage restoration from experts like SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison.

How to repair water-damaged wood furniture

Repairing water damage on wood furniture requires a careful damage restoration process. This process avoids creating further problems while resolving existing issues.

Professionals like SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison make wood furniture repair quick and easy. They’ll perform the following steps to repair furniture after water damage.

Remove moisture

The first step to repairing water-damaged wood furniture is to remove moisture. Drying solutions like hair dryers remove moisture quickly. However, they can worsen warping and cause breakage.

Furniture should sit under direct sunlight for a minimum of 24 hours for successful drying. If sun-drying isn’t possible, a dehumidifier is the next best option for removing moisture. Despite the lengthy process, the furniture reaches excellent condition.

Strip and sand the wood

The next step is to strip and sand water damage stains and discoloration. Individuals can apply a varnish stripper solution to affected wood and oxidize the damaged areas. Scraping tools are ideal for stripping the softened wood’s outermost surface from the rest of the furniture.

After stripping the wood, it’s time to sand. First, sand the wood with a rough grit, then adjust to a finer option to get a smooth surface with a nearly polished outer layer. Brush away any wood dust with a paintbrush or similar tools.

Glue where appropriate

Water can damage the glue on wood furniture as well. Sand between furniture joints to remove affected glue and clear residual dust with a paintbrush.

For pieces requiring reattachment, it’s necessary to use a vice or clamp to keep them together while the glue dries. Epoxy wood glue will dry in 12 to 18 hours, depending on the amount of adhesive necessary and the extent of the water damage.

Stain, paint, and varnish wood furniture

Match damaged furniture with the appropriate waterproof stain color and apply it with a paintbrush. Remove extra staining with a clean rag. If choosing to paint furniture instead, multiple coats of latex enamel-based paint may be necessary.

Some homeowners choose not to stain or paint their wood furniture. In this case, wood varnish is the best solution against water damage.

Wood varnish will waterproof wooden furniture and keep insects away. Be sure to let each coat completely dry; otherwise, moisture becomes trapped between varnish layers and causes extensive damage.

SERVPRO® of Coppell and West Addison offers years of water damage and fire restoration expertise to North Dallas homes and businesses. When your furniture faces water damage, they implement the perfect commercial cleaning solutions. They restore the furniture to save you time and money.

5 Steps to Repair Drywall After Water Damage

7/26/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: The water damage restoration team from SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison shares drywall repair tips for Texas homeowners. Prompt repairs are crucial to limit property damage after a flood.

Steps to Repair Drywall After Water Damage

Residences across the Coppell and West Addison, TX, area experience flooding during summer storms. When this is the case, it’s essential to take care of the damage to the drywall before it worsens.

Neglecting water-damaged areas is dangerous. Without proper water damage restoration by an experienced restoration company, mold and mildew growth can further damage surrounding walls.

When moisture is out of control, homeowners must promptly contact experienced professionals to remove it. Otherwise, DIY mold removal puts the inexperienced cleaner at risk of health effects and ruining the drywall.

How to Repair Drywall

Before proceeding with these steps, turn off the circuit breakers in the water-logged rooms. Also, don’t hesitate to call a professional to make the repair process smoother.

1. Clean up Water

First, clean up all excess water. This includes water on the ground, furniture, or nearby items.

2. Remove the Damaged Materials

After removing the water, get a saw to cut out the drywall with water damage. A good rule of thumb is double the area where there is water damage to ensure the moisture does not spread to the new drywall.

For example, if the water damage is up to one foot, then remove two feet of drywall. Wear masks and eye protection during the removal.

3. Get New Drywall

Once the old drywall is gone, it’s time to cut the new drywall into the correct dimensions. Many use a utility knife to score it, then a saw to clean up the area further.

4. Spray with Mold Killer

Next, spray the hole in the wall or area removed with a mold and bacteria spray. This spray stops mold and bacteria from spreading behind the wall.

5. Install New Drywall

Once the spray dries according to the manufacturer’s directions, install your previously cut piece of drywall. Use drywall tape, clips, screws, and joints for proper installation.

Put the clips up, then use screws to hold the area. After this, tape the edges before adding the tape and joints for a seamless finish.

Average Drywall Repair Cost

The average cost of drywall repair fluctuates based on water damage to the drywall and surrounding areas.

The average cost to repair water damage in ceilings and drywall is between $500 to $2,500. However, this average cost is for significant damages. On the other hand, minor damage can run anywhere from $200 to $500.

Major factors that contribute to water damage drywall repair include:

  •       Severity of water damage (the more severe the water damage, the more it may cost.)
  •       Areas of damage (For example, the ceilings cost more than the side walls.)
  •       Mold remediation needs (Requires professional intervention)
  •       Drywall labor repair costs (An average of $40 to $200 an hour.)
  •       Insulation replacement (This ranges from $1.50 to $3 per square foot but is necessary if the insulation is wet.)

Local Restoration Company Explains Why Water Removal Matters When Your Pipes Burst

5/13/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison details the water removal steps property owners should take in the event of a pipe burst in their commercial or residential property.

What to Do When Your Pipes Burst?

A burst pipe represents a major cause for concern for both commercial and residential property owners. Fortunately, individuals in this situation can get prompt help from the team at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison.

Get expert advice on the best ways to handle water removal, cleanup, and water damage restoration in Addison with this article.

Take These Steps Following a Pipe Burst in Addison

Property owners often feel unsure what to do immediately after a pipe bursts. Taking the correct steps limits property damage and makes repairs easier. The experts at SERVPRO recommend:

Turning Off the Property’s Main Water Valve

Shutting off the main water valve stops additional water from entering the property. Individuals may contact maintenance staff or landlords if they cannot find the main water valve on their own.

Shutting Off the Electricity

Exposing excess water to electricity can result in electrocution. Turn off the electricity at the main breaker box if possible. However, no one should approach the box if it is surrounded by water or otherwise unreachable.

Reaching Out to a Plumber

Plumbers identify the reason for the burst pipe and begin immediate repairs, stopping further damage to the property. Pipes burst due to:

  • Corrosion caused by time and wear and tear
  • Movement of pipes over time
  • Clogs in the plumbing system
  • Freezing temperatures in the winter months

Plumbers may need to replace piping or make other system adjustments to ensure that other pipes do not burst.

Calling a Restoration Company

Getting professional help with water removal and cleanup limits the damage to properties in the Addison area. Damage restoration companies bring along professional-grade equipment for water extraction, including:

  • Large pumps
  • Truck-mounted vacuums
  • Fans
  • Dehumidifiers

Restoration companies handle the cleanup and repair process. They work to bring your property back to better-than-new condition.

Documenting the Damage

Property owners must document all the damage caused by a pipe burst. Take pictures of the damage to the building, furniture, and other possessions. The insurance company will likely ask for these photos later when determining how much compensation to offer.

Handling Other Forms of Property Damage in Allison

Property owners sometimes experience water damage from events other than burst pipes. Storm damage restoration may prove necessary after heavy rains cause flooding, for example.

In addition, some property owners notice damage due to a leaking pipe or sewage backup. Sewage backups expose properties to black water, which contains dangerous bacteria and contaminants that could cause illness.

Property restoration companies like SERVPRO also handle smoke and fire restoration. Fires often start in the kitchen or due to improper wiring in the electric system of a home or business. Fires spread rapidly and may also lead to water damage due to the use of fire hoses and sprinkler systems.

SERVPRO uses years of experience and training with water damage restoration and water removal to assist property owners in the Coppell and Addison, TX, area. The licensed, bonded, and insured crews use specialized equipment to handle property repairs and provide 24-hour emergency responses.

SERVPRO Outlines 5 Signs You Need a Water Damage Restoration Company

4/29/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Whether from a storm or a leaky pipe, water damage wreaks havoc on homes. SERVPRO discusses the signs of severe water damage that mean it’s time to call a professional restoration company

5 Telltale Signs You Need Help in Your Water Damage Restoration

Water damage can affect nearly every surface in your home and can be challenging to address. Contact Team Shaw of SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison for efficient water damage restoration services at (972) 233-8400.

Few surfaces in homes are entirely immune to water damage, and many water restoration companies charge high prices to help repair the effects.

Fortunately, SERVPRO offers emergency water restoration services at an affordable price. In Coppell or Las Colinas, TX, there is no better option than SERVPRO. While homeowners can sometimes address minor water damage, this article will provide some telltale signs that it’s time to hire a professional.

1. Water Staining

The most apparent sign of water damage within a home is water staining. These stains typically appear as darkened areas and commonly appear on walls and other wooden surfaces in the house. Dirty marks on the home’s exterior can also signal a water leak.

When dealing with water stains, the first step is water cleanup. Removing water from the area will prevent further damage. It’s crucial to call a water damage restoration to remove the water stains.

2. Damaged or Warping Wood

When water damage progresses beyond staining, the next symptom homeowners often notice is warped wood. While finished or painted wood can resist water effectively, lumber is a naturally absorbent material. This means that when water comes in contact with exposed wood, it soaks in, causing the wood to expand.

3. Bubbles in Paint

Another telltale sign of water damage is paint that begins to bubble. Water causes this effect by sinking underneath the paint, separating it from the wall. Because paint protects the wall from moisture, bubbling paint can signify significant structural damage if left unchecked.

4. Presence of Mold

Anytime mold is detected within a home, a water leak is likely to blame. Mold needs water to grow, so its presence means water is somewhere nearby. In addition, mold can cause a range of problems, from unpleasant smells to severe health concerns.

The first step after discovering mold in a home should always be to find and address the leaking water. After this, the next step is hiring a professional for mold removal. Mold can be challenging to get rid of, but mold remediation companies use specific strategies to ensure the problem does not return.

For residents in the Coppell and West Addison areas, SERVPRO provides trustworthy mold removal services.

5. Higher Water Bills

While the signs above signal that water damage has already occurred, wary homeowners may be able to identify signs of a water leak before damage occurs. An excellent way to spot a potential issue is by monitoring water bills.

A sharp increase in water usage can be a distinct sign of a leak, as the leak wastes water even when the faucets and appliances in the home are off. If a homeowner suspects a leak, scheduling an inspection with a water and fire restoration company is wise.

SERVPRO is an experienced water damage restoration company serving the residents of Texas. The team has experience repairing residential and commercial water damage and providing commercial cleaning services. Contact Team Shaw of SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison at (972) 233-8400 for rapid repairs if a water leak has damaged your home or business.

SERVPRO Explains Causes of Water Damage that Require Water Damage Restoration

2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO helps property owners in Addison, TX, and surrounding areas protect their investments by highlighting the most common sources of water damage and offering water damage restoration services.

3 Common Causes of Winter Water Damage

#1: Frozen Pipes

Though Texas is known for its heat, winters in the Lone Star State occasionally get very cold. As temperatures creep down below freezing, more homes and commercial properties need to hire water damage restoration services to repair damages caused by frozen pipes.

Plumbing fixtures such as pipes require adequate insulation to protect from freezing temperatures. When exposed to dangerously low temperatures, the standing water in these fixtures freezes. As it freezes, water expands, taking up more space inside the pipe. With nowhere else to go, the ice puts pressure on pipe walls and joints, possibly leading to cracks and ruptures.

The best way to get ahead of freezing temperatures and protect plumbing is to schedule regular maintenance and inspections in autumn, while temperatures are still mild.

Trained experts can detect any underlying issues, make necessary repairs, and thoroughly insulate pipes in residential and commercial properties to prevent freezing. As a bonus, these professionals can offer personalized advice on actions to take should winter storms hit Addison, TX. Avoid calling a commercial restoration service for water damage by scheduling regular maintenance now.

#2: Snow Melt

After winter storms hit, a return of sunshine and the melting of snow feels like a positive change. However, heavy snow melt on rooftops can create hazardous conditions, cause damage, and even contribute to flooding.

The primary issue with snowmelt on rooftops begins with excessive snowfall, like in blizzards or winter storms. Snow piling up half a foot or more places additional weight on roof support and sealant components, increasing the likelihood of structural weaknesses or damage.

When heavy snowfall begins to melt, the meltwater increases the weight on the roof and seeps into any fissures or cracks that have formed. This seepage can reach ceilings, attic spaces, walls, and more, leading to:

  • Mold
  • Rot
  • Flooding
  • Other types of water-related damage

Even when no immediate damage occurs due to structural weaknesses in roofs after a snowstorm, a qualified storm damage restoration service still needs to address these issues.

#3: Difficulties With Water-Dependent Appliances and Other Water Sources

Freezing temperatures can impact the integrity of multiple types of plumbing fixtures and household appliances. These include:

  • Water hoses
  • Valves
  • Outdoor cisterns
  • Gutters
  • And more

The best way to ensure that outdoor plumbing features such as valves, hoses, spigots, and cisterns are safe is to consult professionals. These experts have the experience to provide valuable insight into insulation and protection options.

Property owners in Addison, TX,  who are concerned about the safety of their structures during the winter months should speak with water damage restoration experts to determine risks and appropriate preparations.

5 Water Damage Statistics Every Homeowner Should Know

12/15/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison provides North Dallas homeowners with a few water damage statistics to highlight the importance of water damage restoration.

5 Vital Statistics and Facts About Water Damage Restoration

Water damage is a homeowner’s worst nightmare. It diminishes the home’s value and can deteriorate its structure at a rapid rate. That’s why it’s crucial to call a water damage restoration expert during the first signs of an issue.

However, many people don’t understand how damaging water can be or how vital water damage restoration is to a home’s structure. The professionals at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison put together a few facts and statistics to help homeowners understand the effects of water damage and why it’s crucial to handle it right away. Here are five vital water damage statistics every homeowner should know.

1. Plumbing Supply System Failures Cause the Most Water Loss

When a plumbing supply system fails, the homeowner must seek professional help right away before it takes a toll on the home. 48% of residential water loss stems from plumbing supply system failures, and repairs exceed $5,000 on average. Although most people equate plumbing supply system failures to cracked or frozen pipes, only one-fifth of the cases of water loss originates from pipe issues.

2. Mold Forms Within 48 Hours

Although most carpet and backing dries within 48 hours, mold and other hazardous contaminants can still form in water-ridden areas. Homeowners must call a mold expert after the area dries to prevent bacteria growth that could put their family’s health at risk. It’s also a good idea to contact a water damage restoration company to give the area a commercial cleaning directly after flooding.

Restoration companies use professional-grade equipment to dry the area, diminishing the chances of mold growth.

3. Over 1,000,000,000,000 Gallons of Water Leak from American Homes

If someone gathered all the water leaking from American homes, they could fill 24 billion bathtubs and 40 million swimming pools. The leaks often result in costly water damage restoration and increase the homeowner’s water bill tenfold. Always check the pipes for leaks before the winter season to avoid repairs and skyrocketing water bills.

4. Around 10% of Homes Have Water Leaks Exceeding 90 Gallons of Water Each Day

Small leaks often lead to much bigger problems if the homeowner doesn’t address them quickly. The continuous dribble eventually forms large puddles that deteriorate the home’s structure over time. With around 630 gallons of water dripping from homes each week, it’s vital to patch up any holes or cracks before water damage takes hold.

5. 75% of Water Heaters Malfunction Before the 12-Year Mark

Since most water heaters reside outside the home or in the basement, it’s easy for maintenance to fall by the wayside. However, they cause more water damage than most other plumbing fixtures. Once the water heater’s tank corrodes, cracks cause troublesome leaks that deteriorate the home’s structure.

Homeowners should hire someone to check their water heater every now and again to ensure that everything is functioning correctly.

Water Damage Restoration is Best Left to the Experts

11/18/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Many homeowners think repairing water damage themselves will save them time and money, but SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison explains why bringing in professionals is more economical and causes less stress and headache for the homeowner.

Why Water Damage Restoration Is a Job for the Professionals and Not DIY

Water damage wreaks havoc on a home. Leaky roofs, natural floods, melting snow, and leaky or busted pipes are just some of the potential threats.

If the damage doesn’t look too serious, homeowners, trying to save time and money, might be tempted to perform the water damage restoration themselves. However, with a lack of knowledge and experience, attempting water damage repair themselves often costs more money in the long run.

SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison has the experience needed to repair these issues, as their motto states, “Like it never even happened.” This is a level of repair that few homeowners can achieve.

Professionals Are Better Equipped

With SERVPRO professionals specializing in water damage restoration, they have all the proper equipment for the repair. Letting the experts handle the job saves the homeowner the stress of trying to figure out what equipment is needed, let alone find and learn how to operate it.

Experts Plan for Current and Future Repairs

Experts know how to assess the damage and then create and execute a plan to repair it. With a trained eye, these professionals know what to look for far beyond the obvious damage. While the homeowner may only focus on the current damage, considerations for future issues, like the potential microbial growth, may be overlooked. Future issues mean more future expenses.

Experts Know What to Do

For most homeowners, dealing with water damage issues is a new experience. Having a professional help navigate the situation ensures everything is taken care of in the most efficient and effective way possible.

This is even more important when it comes to flood damage restoration. For example, in the case of a flood, water will damage much more than the walls and floors of the home. The homeowner will experience damaged furniture, rugs, books, or other personal items. The SERVPRO team knows what items may be restored and helps the homeowner with that process.

Also, because SERVPRO specializes in these repairs, they understand what needs to happen as far as insurance claims, repairs to ensure mold does not grow in the future, and other issues the homeowner may not be familiar with.

Safety First

When dealing with water damage repairs, most homeowners do not take into consideration the dangers of the water itself. Water from a busted pipe or septic tank could contain sewage, bacteria, or other organisms that pose many serious health risks.

The SERVPRO team understands these risks and keeps these in mind when dealing with the removal of the water, repairs, and the contents restoration afterward.

Certified, Experienced, and Available Day or Night

Being certified and helping clients in rain or shine and any time day or night gives SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison the reputation as a premier water, mold, and fire damage restoration service for the Dallas area.

Contact the experts at SERVPRO for more information about water damage restoration by phone at (972) 233-8400 or email at SERVPROofcoppellandwestaddison@gmail.com, or visit SERVPRO at 1707 E. Belt Line Rd, Suite 103-4, Coppell, TX 75019.

Five Causes of Flooded Basements: Water Damage Restoration Guide

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO explains the top five reasons that basements flood in West Addison.

Basements and crawl spaces are one of the most common flooding locations in a home. SERVPRO in West Addison, TX, offers storm and water damage restoration for homes and businesses with recent flooding.

Flooding causes more than water damage. Over time, excess water can result in unwanted mold and mildew. Beginning the water damage restoration process as soon as possible is essential to a successful recovery.

SERVPRO understands the value of speedy and effective storm damage restoration. Their efficient commercial cleaning services in West Addison restore any part of a home and prevents further issues such as mold.

Five Causes of Flooded Basements

  1. Drainage Failure

Every home uses a drainage tile system to prevent water from coming in. Basement flooding is often the result of poor drainage tile installation or failure.

Severe rainstorms can weaken the integrity of a drainage system and cause basement flooding. If the basement floods immediately after a heavy storm, it is likely due to a damaged drainage tile.

  1. Basement Sealing

The home’s basement sealings surround the foundation and prevent water from seeping in. Storms with strong winds and heavy rains, such as hurricanes, can affect the securing capabilities of the basement sealing.

Poor basement sealing allows water to flow into the basement and leads to flooding. A storm damage restoration team can restore the basement and secure the sealing.

  1. Clogged Gutters

Gutters run along the top edges of a home to collect and direct water away from the house. Without regular cleaning, outside debris such as leaves and bugs will gather in the gutters and eventually create clogs.

A clogged gutter cannot collect rainwater, which means water runs down the side of the house and into the basement. The best way to prevent this from happening is to clean the gutters regularly. Heaving winds and rain will quickly fill up the gutters, so clearing away any debris right after a storm is essential.

  1. Plumbing Problems

Plumbing problems, such as issues with the water heater or pipes, quickly lead to basement flooding. Plumbing pipes are responsible for carrying wastewater out of the house. If there is a crack or break in the pipe, water will seep out into the basement. Pipelines will break due to old age, improper water pressure, or structural failures.

Water heaters and sump pumps hold a significant amount of water and should receive regular maintenance. Although these appliances are especially useful for houses, if either of them breaks, the potential for basement flooding increases.

  1. Home Location

Unfortunately, the location of the house can be a factor when it comes to basement flooding. For example, homes on top of a hill are far less likely to flood than houses in a valley.

Another factor is the weather. Homes located in areas with heavy snow or frequent rain storms have an increased chance of flooding, mainly if located near the bottom of a hill.

Water Damage Restoration in West Addison

Whatever the cause may be, contacting a water or fire restoration company as soon as a flood occurs is the best way to minimize damage. SERVPRO understands that time is valuable during storm damage restoration. Their experts are always ready to provide professional commercial cleaning and water damage restoration.

Call SERVPRO at (972) 233-8400 for effective water and fire restoration in West Addison.

Tips for Staying Safe after a Water Damage Event

Tips for Staying Safe after a Water Damage Event

When your home or business has water or flood damage, consider taking the following precautions to minimize danger or prevent secondary damage while waiting for SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison to arrive for your home or business.

Water Damage From Clean Water

  1. Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  2. Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock.  Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  3. Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.  Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  4. Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
  5. Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
  6. Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors as they may cause staining.
  7. Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  8. Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Water Damage from Contaminated Water

  1. Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  2. Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock.  Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  3. Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage.  Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
  4. Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
  5. Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  6. Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminants.
  7. Discard any food and/ or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.

Is your North Dallas home ready for the cold weather?

2/10/2021 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest for your water restoration needs. (972) 233-8400

Winter is in full swing this week in the Dallas area. Whatever part of North Dallas you are in, most people are experiencing very cold or freezing temperatures this time of year. Everyone wonders what needs to be done to protect their pipes in freezing temperatures. It is important to protect your pipes and your plumbing system in cold weather.
If you will be away from home for days at a time, make sure that all of your pipes are kept warm, especially in spaces that receive little or no heat. If any pipes will stay exposed to freezing temperatures, open one faucet with a very small drip to keep water moving through the pipes.
On the outside of your home, cover up your outside faucets with foam or towels to insulate them.
When water freezes in a pipe, it expands the same way a soda can would. If it expands enough, the pipe bursts and could result in serious damage. In North Dallas, just like other warm climate areas, our pipes are more vulnerable to freezing because most of them are in areas outside of the main insulation. Pipes and valves on outside walls or in the attics are the most common trouble spots.

If you experience a water damage due to frozen pipes, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 to help with your water restoration needs.

Prevent Water Damages Before They Happen

11/29/2020 (Permalink)

Be careful where you plant plants and trees that have intense roots. If you are not careful, they will grow right into your sprinkler system, drainage field, and pipes.

If you see lots of leaves, sticks, and such up in your gutters, they need to be cleaned out. On a rainy day, a clogged gutter can send water spilling into your home’s foundation and through the roof, which could cause some serious water damage!

With so many water pipes hidden behind walls and in the floors in your house, you might not know there is a leak until the damage is done. It is a good idea to keep a close eye on your monthly water bill. If you see it starting to creep up, or get one that is uncommonly high, it’s a pretty good sign that you may have a leak somewhere.

It is inevitable, kitchen and bathroom clogs are going to happen. Chances are at some point in your life you’ve used one of those powerful chemical drain cleaners to get things moving again. But as convenient as they may be, most folks don’t realize those caustic chemicals are also eating away at their pipes. If you rely on them a lot, you could be setting yourself up for leaks. That’s why owning a drain snake is a good solution to clear away clogs.

You should definitely avoid pouring grease down your kitchen sink. It doesn’t matter if you flush it with hot or cold water. It can still congeal and cling to your pipes and could still cause some serious damage and blockage.

If your home suffers from a water damage, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.

What to know about dishwasher leaks

4/29/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest to help with your water damage (972) 233-8400.

For some people, dishwasher leaks start as a slow drip that may not be immediately noticed. Others discover dishwasher leaks as soap suds bubble their way across the kitchen floor.

Stopping leaks before they cause damage is ideal, but depending on the situation, is not always possible.

Time is critical when it comes to a water leak of any type. The faster you respond and take action to stop water from spilling onto your kitchen floor, the less damage that will be done – and that means less costly repairs!

What to do When Your Dishwasher Leaks

  1. If your dishwasher is leaking a significant amount of water, first turn off the dish washing cycle. For small leaks, it may be possible to capture the water with a towel or bowl and let the cycle finish first, but this is generally not recommended.
  2. Try to keep water from pooling on the floor. It’s easy for water to travel downwards and cause damage to your home’s structure out of sight. Use bowls, plates, and towels to capture and control the water flow.
  3. Clean up as much water as you can to minimize damage.
  4. Determine the cause of the leak. Every leak has its own particular cause, and your course of action may take a bit of detective work.
  5. Repair your dishwasher leak before it ruins your kitchen floor. Some flooring is more susceptible to water damage than others, such as wood or bamboo.

If you have an unexpected water damage call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400. We are always here to help!

Water damage in the kitchen

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest for your Kitchen appliance water damage (972) 233-8400.

Ask any homeowner what their favorite appliance is in the kitchen and the majority will say the dishwasher.

Why? It is so much easier to load dirty dishes and push a start button than it is to stand over a sink washing, rinsing, and drying dishes. The dishwasher does all three steps and you can take a relaxing break while it does all the work.

As much as a dishwasher is wonderful it can also become your enemy by causing costly residential flooding. In certain circumstances you may be able to prevent damage by checking the two water lines that are connected to your dishwasher twice a year. The hoses can deteriorate over time and leak or blow out in the middle of the cleaning cycle disbursing gallons of water.

It is highly recommended that you operate your dishwasher when you are at home. Do not turn it on and walk out the door to work or run errands. If you are home and see the leak you can quickly shut off the appliance or the main water source and soak up as much water as possible to avoid further damage.

If you find yourself with a water damage caused by a kitchen appliance, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest, we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

Below are five ticking time bombs and consider what you can do to disarm their damage:

HOT WATER HEATER

  • About 75 percent of tank water heaters fail by the time they’re 12 years old
  • 70 percent of water heater failures are from leaks or burst tanks
  • Average damage is $4,000

What to do: Check the tank regularly for leaks. Have your tank maintained yearly. It is recommended to replace your water heater every 10 years.

WASHING MACHINE

  • More than half of all water damage are due to broken washing machine hoses.
  • Damages average more than $6,000.

What to do: Inspect hoses once a month. Look for signs of impending leaks, such as blisters, bulges, cracks, discoloration or kinks. Turn off the water supply to the washing machine when you go on vacation.

DISHWASHER

  • Dishwashers usually fail when they are 10-12 years old
  • Flooding damage from a dishwater leak can be more than $5000

What to do: Tighten the drain line where it connects to under-sink plumbing. Replace the water supply line immediately if you run across a small leak. Don’t run the dishwasher while away from home.

REFRIGERATOR

  • Icemakers are the primary cause for water leaks in a refrigerator
  • The life expectancy of an ice maker is less than that of the refrigerator, as low as five years.

What to do: Replace copper water lines with braided steel alternatives. Check the water supply line behind the fridge yearly.

AIR CONDITIONER

  • Attic air conditioners can cause the most damage because water can leak throughout the entire home.
  • Average loss from flooding caused by a leaky air conditioner is $5000

What to do: Install a secondary drain line and drain pan overflow switch. Have your A/C maintained regularly, which includes changing the filter and checking the refrigerant level.

Causes of Water Damage to Commercial Buildings

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400

While it's true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms, severe weather isn't the only cause of water damage to your business. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

  1.  Malfunctioning sprinkler systems: Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.
  2. Damaged appliances and equipment: This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.
  3. Broken pipes and plumbing: Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.
  4. Backed up sewer lines: This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Metrocrest will get you back up and running again and make it “Like it never even happened." (972) 233-8400

Water Damage Tip

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest(972) 233-8400 for your water mitigation needs.

Did you know by waiting too long before you react to a water loss can put a big strain on your budget? You can mistakenly cause a minor water damage to go from a simple job and covered loss, to large non salvage-demolition job.  By delaying water mitigation, you can also compromise your coverage.  Most insurance policies say it is the insured's responsibility to mitigate.

If you have a minor water leak, chances are we can come in and dry everything in-place.  By waiting, after 48 hours it is more likely that we will have to remove baseboards at a minimum and many floor coverings may not be salvageable at the point.

After waiting several days of not mitigating, chances are, we are going to need to remove all wet porous materials like drywall.  This could impact cabinets and countertops or tiled walls and most floor coverings at this point are non-salvageable.

Act fast, by calling SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 as soon as you learn of your water damage. We work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to ensure you are taken care of and we will make it “Like it never even happened."

It's the water you don't see

8/10/2019 (Permalink)

With any leak, it is the water you don't see that can cause the most damage. When you experience a water damage, make the right choice. A mop and common household cleaning products may not be enough for the unseen water intrusions.  While the surface may seem dry, the water you do not see can contain bacteria, or cause mold, rot and other unseen damage.

DID YOU KNOW...The insurance industry estimates that approximately 90 percent of household damages stem from water-related occurrences. The most commonly reported cause is leaky or broken pipes and plumbing fixtures.

AVOID WATER DAMAGE FROM APPLIANCES

Home appliances are considered a leading cause of preventable water damage. By implementing a simple inspection and maintenance program, homeowners can reduce their risk significantly:

  • Dishwasher - Periodically check around the base of the dishwasher, as well as the water supply line under the sink.
  • Refrigerator - For refrigerators with ice makers, periodically check the hose connection attached to the water supply.
  • Washing Machine - Hoses should be inspected regularly for wetness around hose ends, as well as for signs of bulging, cracking or fraying. Hoses should be replaced every three to five years.
  • Water Heater - While the service life of the standard water heater is 10 to 15 years, water heaters should be inspected routinely for signs of leaks or tank rust. Water heaters should be located next to a floor drain or placed inside a drain pan piped to the floor drain.

We Can Restore Your Water Damaged Hardwood Floors In Your Home

6/14/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest to help with your water damage needs (972) 233-8400 https://www.SERVPROmetrocrest.com/water-damage-restoration

If you find that pipe leak has left water damage to the hardwood flooring in your home, it can be difficult to relax and overwhelming to consider cleaning up such a mess on your own.

When a leaky pipe creates a water damage in your home, SERVPRO of Metrocrest has the means to eliminate moisture and save your structure from potential mold proliferation. SERVPRO of Metrocrest can be at your home within hours to move, dry, and disinfect affected furniture as well as address the accumulated moisture in your hardwood floor. With wood, it is especially vital to keep moisture levels low to prevent structural damage and mold growth, and our professionals can use moisture meters with long, Teflon-coated probes to monitor both your floor and subfloor's moisture levels while drying.

Our team of certified technicians can use tenting to remove water from your flooring more effectively. This process involves covering flooring at ground level with a large sheet of plastic that is usually about 6 millimeters in thickness. Once taped down, this plastic helps pull moisture in the air out of surfaces more rapidly and can be used in combination with dehumidifiers during drying to capture more water vapor.

When treating hardwood floors, it is vital to mitigate any permanent buckling, cupping, or warping of the flooring. During drying, centrifugal air movers can be positioned to pull up moisture from both on top of and underneath the floor, which can also help dry the plywood subfloor. SERVPRO of Metrocrest technicians can use desiccant dehumidifiers to absorb this moisture and lower humidity considerably with the aid of materials like silica gel. In open areas like a living room, polyethylene chambers are often crafted to create smaller, contained chambers for faster drying.

If you have water damage to your hardwood floors call  SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400. We are always here to help!

Coppell, Tx Water Damage: Extract Water Swiftly and Mitigate Damage Quickly

11/8/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 https://www.SERVPROmetrocrest.com/water-damage-restoration

When a water damage happens, regardless of the source, you need a professional service like SERVPRO of Metrocrest. We have years of experience and training to return your home to normal as quickly as possible.

Significant water damage in your home is not something many people even consider possible. Broken plumbing such as a leaking faucet can cause thousands of dollars in damage before the homeowner is even aware of it. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Metrocrest has the skills and equipment to take care of it.

First, we inspect the damage of your home. Once that is done, we remove any standing water with our water extractors.

Our next step is to examine the property no longer under water. There is always some water trapped in carpets and wood floors, so our technicians will use special vacuums designed to remove water without damaging the nape of the carpet or surface of the wood. Dallas, TX - Forecast calls for more heavy rain

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400

As the rain continues in Dallas are, we at SERVPRO of Metrocrest wanted to make sure that you are safe.

Heavy rain and flooding are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.  No matter where your home is there is always a potential for flood damage.  Floodsmart.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, does not mean you won't in the future.

Please remember these safety tips:

  • Stay away from floodwaters.  If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water.  They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood does strike your home or business, contact your local SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task.  The SERVPRO System is prepared to handle any sized disaster.  When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of Metrocrest will help you take it back.

What should I do when I see water leaking from my ceiling?

8/27/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest for all your water mitigation needs (972) 233-8400

Water can be destructive. When it meets the drywall that makes up your interior walls and ceilings it can make them look unsightly — or worse, it can damage wallboard enough that it collapses and falls apart, which can cause huge homeowner headaches. Don’t panic though, SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 can help.

  • Poke a hole in it. As the circle of water in the ceiling expands, take a screwdriver, a drywall saw or any sharp utensil and poke a hole in the middle of the stain. This simple hole drains the built-up water, allows the drywall to air out and many times will stop the water damage from expanding across the ceiling.
  • Catch the water. This seems silly and like common sense, but we see it enough to mention it. Call us to stop the source, but don't forget to take care of the moisture on the floor and surrounding area. Put a bucket or container under the drip and use towels to soak up the rest. If the leak is bad enough the container fills up, check back and keep it emptied.

SERVPRO of Metrocrest Technicians are IICRC-trained and certified, so they can determine what kind of loss you have and how to properly take care of it, so you don’t have any further problems.

Coppell, TX - Hot Water Heater Busts in the Attic Causing Several Rooms to be Affected

Princeton, TX water damage caused by a roof tarp

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.

Roof damage can be caused by heavy rains, winds, or falling debris. To quickly solve this issue and reduce the possibility of additional damage, many people choose to use a roof tarp. Roof tarps allow you to have a quick solution and a gap of time until better weather conditions allow for safe inspection and repair.

It seems like a good (sometimes cheap) idea to quickly cover the holes in the roof, stop a water leak, and sleep comfortable at night knowing that no rodents or other animals will enter your home or business through those holes.

Although a roof tarp has many benefits, we do not recommend it as a permanent solution to your problem, because:

  • Some brands will wear out over time.
  • It is a quick fix for a leaking roof, but it is only temporary. It can cause more trouble as time passes.
  • If the roof has water damage that leaked into your home, mold could be growing in the affected areas.
  • Wind can move the tarp, leaving spaces uncovered where water can start leaking again.
  • The wind will cause it to flap, creating annoying noises in your home or business.
  • The tarp may increase the heat inside your home or business, which could lead to a higher electrical bill.
  • If not installed properly, it could hold small pools of standing water, perfect for mosquito proliferation.
  • Heat and moisture may become trapped under the tarp, causing mold and other damage to shingles

You, as a home owner, have the right to protect your property and mitigate. As long you have proper coverage from your insurance company, you can avoid further water damage, mold issues and higher bills.

We received a phone call from a home owner in Princeton, TX. They had a water damage due to a roof tarp. We worked quickly and efficiently with the homeowners and the roofing company to take care of all their water mitigation needs.

If you have an unexpected water damage call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400. We are always here to help!

Steps to take if your toilet overflows

5/15/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400

One of the most common plumbing problems is the toilet overflowing. When it happens, it always seems to be at the wrong time. Try these simple steps.

First, locate your water shut off valve near the base of your toilet. Turn the valve until the water shuts off to prevent additional overflow. If your toilet does not have one, open the tank and rig the float to stay in its position and not let any more water fill the tank.

Second, if water has spilled over and onto the floor, immediately remove it. Use towels to clean up a small amount but for larger amounts of water call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400. We can extract water out of the flooring quickly to prevent damage to your home.

Next, if you know there’s a foreign object preventing the toilet from flushing, get some rubber gloves and try to remove it. If a clog is the culprit of the overflow, grab a toilet plunger and try plunging it free. A sink plunger could work if you do not have a toilet plunger, but it likely won’t be as effective.

Lastly, if these steps do not remove the clog contact a plumber . Since, toilet overflowing could be a sign of a larger plumbing issue. The clog may be located farther along your pipe and a plumber will be able to diagnose and fix the problem right away.

Water Damage - Water Extraction in Addison, TX Properties is the Key!

4/21/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400

There was a down pour of rain and hail this past weekend. Which meant more flooding in our area, which is why homeowners need to call in a professional service.

Remediating Dallas, TX flooding is never a simple task. Every home is different, and any restoration company needs to be familiar with the area. SERVPRO of Metrocrest is quick to respond with a 24/7 response team. We do everything possible to start work as swiftly as possible, taking care of not just our customers, but our neighbors.

Our response team leader begins the quick inspection. We work with your insurance adjuster if appropriate. We bring in pumps to remove the deep water. Our commercial grade machines quickly draw out the water and make it safer for our response team to enter the home. We then use extraction wands to remove surface water that the pumps cannot draw out. SERVPRO of Metrocrest personnel utilizes the same devices to remove water from carpets and wood floors. Our extraction wands also have a built-in heating unit, so we use them to begin the drying process as well.

Technicians use moisture meters to determine if the carpets and wood are dry. If there is still a high level of moisture, we set up air movers to force warm, dry air across the surfaces to continue drawing out water trapped inside them.

We also test the surrounding walls for high moisture content. Since many building materials are more easily damaged when wet, we first set up dehumidifiers to draw moisture from the items and the surrounding air. The machines we use can remove 25 gallons of water per day. As everything dries, we carefully use the same air movers to speed up the drying process without causing any further damage that might force us to demolish drywall or other materials.

If you have flooding problems in your home, SERVPRO of Metrocrest is here to help. We have provided disaster remediation to our neighbors for many years and are ready to assist you today. Call us for more information at (972) 233-8400 or to schedule a visit.

Winter weather is in full swing in North Dallas

1/5/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest for your Water Mitigation Needs (972) 233-8400.

Winter is in full swing. Whatever part of North Dallas you are in, most people are experiencing very cold or freezing temperatures this time of year. Everyone wonders what needs to be done to protect their pipes in freezing temperatures. It is important to protect your pipes and your plumbing system in cold weather. It is especially important if you plan to be away from home for long periods of time.
On the inside of your home: If you will be away from home for days at a time, make sure that all of your pipes are kept warm, especially in spaces that receive little or no heat. If any pipes will stay exposed to freezing temperatures, open up one faucet with a very small drip to keep water moving through the pipes.
On the outside of your home: Protect your pipes as you would protect your plants. Cover up your outside faucets with foam or towels to insulate them.    Especially if you plan to be away from home this winter, remember to leave your contact information with a neighbor. You might consider giving them a key to your home, too, and leaving your preferred plumber's contact information behind should an emergency occur.
Wondering what happens if pipes freeze? When water freezes in a pipe, it expands the same way a soda can would. If it expands enough, the pipe bursts and could result in serious damage. In North Dallas, just like other warm climate areas, our pipes are more vulnerable to freezing because most of them are located in areas outside of the main insulation. Pipes and valves on outside walls or in the attics are the most common trouble spots. If you open a faucet and water does not come out, you may be dealing with a frozen pipe.

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest a call so that our experienced team can come out and assess the situation. If a water pipe bursts, turn off the water at the main shut-off valve and if possible open a hose bib to relieve pressure until repairs can be done.

Water Damage Restoration for North Dallas

1/5/2018 (Permalink)

If your home suffers a water damage, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.

Water damage restoration is one of the most rapidly growing and evolving industries in the country. What used to consist of a contractor setting up a few fans in a flooded house has now become a bonafide science, largely in part to the greater understanding we now have of the serious negative health repercussions that can be caused by mold, mildew, and bacteria growth, and the better technologies available to tackle a water restoration job.

Priority Number One—Dry the Place Out

Without question, the most important step a homeowner needs to take when faced with flood or other water damage is to waste no time in drying the area out. As has already been mentioned, the old standby of setting up all your house fans to dry out a flooded house or structure really isn’t very effective in the long run. It may do a satisfactory job on the surface, but deeper water damage to walls, wood, carpet and furniture, along with insufficient drying, can lead to more profound consequences such as mold and mildew growth, the flourishing of harmful bacteria, and in extreme conditions, actual damage to the structural integrity of the home itself.

To combat all these harmful possibilities, the best thing you can do is to call in a licensed water damage restoration specialist like SERVPRO of Metrocrest to tackle the job. We are well-schooled in all the latest methods of water damage restoration, and we have access to the most cutting-edge technology available to dry out your home and prevent harmful fungi and bacteria from getting a foothold.

 What to Expect

With any restoration project, expect a full-on assessment of your affected area from the get-go. SERVPRO of Metrocrest will set up dehumidifiers, air purifiers, blowers, fans, and special floor driers and cleaners to quickly and efficiently dry out your water damaged home. Besides these standard steps, and depending on the extent of the damage, your technician might also employ the use of wall driers, sanitizers, and mold and mildew remediation techniques and equipment to ensure that what is already a tough situation doesn’t get worse over time. The water damage restoration cost is far less than what permanent damage results in.

 In the Long Run

The full extent of the steps that need to be taken could be much greater, however. Depending on the amount of water that caused the damage and the duration of time that passed before a restoration crew was called in, you may be looking at a much larger project. Crawl spaces, ductwork, ceilings and insulation may also need to be attended to, and if there is severe damage to drywall, carpet, or structural aspects of your home, you may be looking at a larger home renovation project altogether. If this is the case, contact a general contractor after your restoration work is done in order to get your house back in working order as quickly as possible.

Please Advise

Water damage is not a problem where you want to cut corners or wait to address. Tackle these homeowner nightmares by calling a water damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Metrocrest immediately in order to ensure that neither the structure of your home or the health of your family is compromised. With the help of a qualified specialist, like us, you’ll fast be on track towards restoring your home back to its original condition.

Time is Money in a Water Damage

11/21/2017 (Permalink)

If your home or office suffers from a water damage call SERVPRO of Metrocest (972) 233-8400.

You have heard it said again and again: Time is money.

The old adage is never truer than when dealing with a water-damaged home or business. Every minute matters, because every minute the property remains wet could turn primary damage into secondary- or even permanent damage.  That's why emergency response matters.

Secondary water damage occurs when the moisture from the primary event (flood, leak, etc.) begins to evaporate on its own into the air.  Over time the air will no longer be able to hold the moisture from the evaporation.  The moisture will have to go somewhere and a very basic principle behind psychometrics is that wet goes to dry.  The moisture may go into your drywall, cabinetry, sheetrock, hardwood floors, vinyl floors, etc.  Once the moisture is allowed to sit, mold can then begin to grow.  This is why emergency action is so incredibly important.

Let's face it: Floods, burst pipes, and leaks simply don't abide by the 9-to-5 workday.  So why should your restoration provider?  SERVPRO of Metrocrest Professionals are on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the state-of-the-art equipment and proven methods to get the job done right as quickly as possible. This includes every holiday, even Thanksgiving.  So, if that turkey decides to burrow into your piping and causes a water damage to occur you can call us and we will be there.

If the unthinkable happens, call your local SERVPRO of Metrocrest Professionals at (972) 233-8400 to help you avoid the cost and hassle of secondary damages.  We pledge to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Dallas Water Damage Tips for Drying Out Your Home or Business

3/17/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Of Metrocrest provides 24 hr Emergency Service (972) 233-8400.

Floods and Water Damage affect your Dallas area house in 3 ways:

1. The water damages materials. Wallboard will disintegrate if it stays wet too long; wood can swell, warp, or rot; electrical parts can short out, malfunction, and cause fires or shock.

2. Mud, silt, and unknown contaminants in the water not only get everything dirty; they are also unhealthy.

3. Dampness promotes the growth of mildew, a mold or fungus that can grow on everything.

The following steps work on all three of these problems. It is very important to do these steps in order.

Lower the Humidity

Everything will dry more quickly and clean more easily if you can reduce the humidity in the house. There are many ways to lower the humidity and stop the rot and mildew. But you’ll have to delay using some methods if you have no electricity.

  • Open up the house. If the humidity outside is lower than it is indoors, and if the weather permits, open all the doors and windows to exchange the moist indoor air for drier outdoor air. Your body will tell you if the humidity is lower outdoors. If the sun is out, it should be drier outside. If you have a thermometer with a humidity gauge, you can monitor the indoor and outdoor humidity. On the other hand, when temperatures drop at night, an open house is warmer and will draw moisture indoors. At night, and at other times when the humidity is higher outdoors, close up the house.
  • Open closet and cabinet doors. Remove drawers to let air circulate. Drawers may stick because of swelling. Don’t try to force them. Help them dry by opening up the back of the cabinet so air can get into it. You will probably be able to remove the drawers as the cabinet dries out.
  • Use fans. Fans help move the air and dry out your home. Do not use central air conditioning or the furnace blower if the ducts were under water. They will blow out dirty air that might contain contaminants from the sediment left in the duct work. Clean or hose out the ducts first.
  • Run dehumidifiers. Dehumidifiers and window air conditioners will reduce the moisture, especially in closed-up areas.
  • Use desiccants. Desiccants (materials that absorb moisture) are very useful in drying closets or other closed areas where air cannot move through. Desiccants like those listed below are usually available at hardware, grocery, or drug stores.
  • Call SERVPRO Of Metrocrest. SERVPRO Of Metrocrest specialize in drying out flooded buildings in Dallas and the surrounding areas. We have large fans and dehumidifiers that can dry out a house in a few days. Be careful about some contractors who inflate prices after a disaster. Contact your insurance provider about SERVPRO services and reputation. Be patient. Drying your house could take several days. Until your house is reasonably dry, damage caused by mildew and decay will continue. The musty odor will stay forever if the house is not dried out well.

SERVPRO Understands that Crawl Space Water is a Headache

SERVPRO of Metrocrest Understands Dallas Crawl Space Issues

SERVPRO of Metrocrest understands there's a lot of crawl space water issues out there.  We thought this information from http://homerenovations.about.com/od/houseexteriorframework/a/WaterCrawlSpace.htm  would be very helpful.  Don't hesitate to call us at SERVPRO of Metrocrest, if you're in the Dallas area and need advice.  We're here to help.

With excessive water in the crawl space, you have the related problem of mold. Mold loves to grow in places that have: a.) Moisture; b.) Lack of light. Both conditions perfectly describe a crawlspace.  Mold will grow on the piers, joists, ducts, and other hard surfaces. But that's not all of the problem. Mold also grows on the "soft" materials, such as fiberglass insulation and on the plastic vapor barrier. When fiberglass insulation develops mold, it's impossible to clean off. Rip it out and replace it.

How landscape companies fix your problem.

The process described here basically sets up a perimeter within the crawlspace and seeks to capture the water trying to infiltrate the perimeter. When water hits this border, it is diverted into gravel-filled channels and fed by gravity to a sump pump. The sump pump then siphons up the water and purges it from the crawlspace.

What happens when they come into your house:

  1. Protect: Unless you can access your crawl space from the exterior, you will need to bring in materials through the house and down an access door. You will need to protect all walk areas with plastic. Or, to prevent slipping, you can use builder's or rosin paper.
  2. Remove Vapor Barrier: Your crawl space may already have a plastic vapor barrier. Remove this and discard.
  3. Dig Trench: Dig trench around entire interior foundation, using foundation as a guide. Trench should be between 8" and 24" from the foundation. If not, it may undermine the foundation.
  4. Lay Pipe: Lay down 3" socked flex perforated pipe through entire perimeter trench.
  5. Cover with Gravel: Cover with 1 1/2" drain rock.
  6. Spread Soil: What to do with all of that dug-up soil? Spread it evenly around crawl space.
  7. Install GFCI: Install a GFCI outlet in crawlspace.
  8. Install Sump Pump: At the low end of the perimeter trench, install a sump pump as recommended by manufacturer's directions.
  9. Discharge to Exterior: Sump pump to discharge perimeter trench water to outside.
  10. Install Vapor Barrier: Install 6 mil vapor barrier to prevent vapor transfer to crawlspace.

It's dumb, simple work.  Still, you might be happier hiring a company.

It's hard work, especially if your crawl space is very low. Mine was between 4'6" and 5', which is pretty good. Even then, you have hundreds of pounds of drain rock and hundreds of feet of perforated pipe to move through the house. If you're not adept at electrical work, installing the GFCI for the sump pump can present a learning curve, too.  Not an impossible DIY task, but you'll want to think long and hard before you take it on yourself.

Cost

Cost differs according to where you live and the size of your house (and the size of your problem; bigger or even multiple sump pumps may be needed).  My house required 170' of perforated pipe and a single Zoeller 1/3 HP sump pump. I'd say it was a fairly average installation. Cost to hire a company, all materials and labor included (Fall 2009): $3,600.  More recently, dealing with the purchase of a house that had standing water in the crawlspace, a few sources quoted a price of about $5,000.

How urgent?

Water mitigation and mold remediation companies will not agree, but you do have some leeway. Water can sit in the crawl space for a long time without having any adverse effect on your house.  In the short term, you're dealing with mold on hard surfaces and perhaps some insulation needs to be removed and replaced. Over the long term, you're in for trouble: standing water can damage the house's foundation; wooden beams and joists begin to rot; and harmful strains of mold can develop.  At the very least, you will be required to dry up the crawl space when it comes time to sell your house.

Be Ready for Flood Damage Dallas

SERVPRO of Metrocrest is here to help with your Dallas Flood Damage Restoration

As the rain continues in Dallas County, we at SERVPRO of Metrocrest wanted to make sure that you are flood smart.

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.  Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert- there is always a potential for flood damage.  Floodsmart.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, does not mean you won't in the future.  In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas.  On average, floods cost $3.5 billion in annual losses in the United States.

According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  The ARC offers the following flood safety tips.

If a flood does strike your home or business, contact your local SERVPRO of Metrocrest Professionals.

Dallas SERVPRO of Metrocrest Wants You to Know What to do When Water Damage Occurs

11/25/2015 (Permalink)

After you have experienced water damage the first thing you should do regardless of the type of water damage is to shut off the water source if possible.  Once the water source is stopped contact SERVPRO of Metrocrest at (972) 233-8400.  The faster mitigation begins, the less damage is sustained to your home or office.  While awaiting our services there are certain steps that can be taken:

For clean water losses:

  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.  Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.  Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture o a safe placed.
  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is a potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
  • For contaminated water:

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage.  Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
  • Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
  • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminants.
  • Discard any food and/ or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated items.
  • We are always here to help, where the water loss is big or small, clean or contaminated water and are a phone call away at (972) 233-8400.

SERVPRO is Faster to Water Damages in Dallas

    11/25/2015 (Permalink)
